Jellys I always take down with rocks or with spells/wands as otherwise you ruin your weapon and anything thrown other than rocks actually heals the jelly. īees are definitely a pain if you don't have poison resist, but if you do, they are pretty harmless as long as you don't get surrounded. It's also fun to pop them next to other creatures as they get hurt too. Also, any spell is good, like pain or whatever. Just throw something at them, like a rock or a dart and pop them before they get to you. At least I can survive a few hits and run from him. Comparatively, Sigmund isn't even that big of a deal anymore.

It obviously won't help you cast iron bolt though.Īnd the number of dead adventurers continue to rise.Įvery time I finally get a character past past level 7 they die to 1-hit KO: exploding spores, room full of wasps, some jelly's acid splash, 8-headed hydra, Erolcha, and that ice-statue from before. This works well enough to learn and cast something like magic mapping on a fighter type, just make sure you do it somewhere safe. It also looks at your current equipment, so if you really, really want that spell you can unequip your weapon (if it's slow), remove your shield, and put on armor with a low EV penalty.

She protects from miscasts, so you're free to spam to your hearts content.Įdit: Added intelligence to the mix of things checked. The miscast effects on higher level spells are not worth it since you can really mess up a promising character (trust me).īTW, all the above goes out the window if you follow Sif Muna. If you can't do that, then wait until either your spellcasting is sufficiently high or you find a spell as above. Then you should be able to more easily cast the spell you're looking for. When I find myself in the situation you're in (higher level spell in a school I don't have), what people usually do is find a low level spell in the same school and spam it until you've got a few levels. It's also harder to train than the schools generally. Spellcasting will help all your spells and gives you more mana. If you search around on crawl wiki you can find the actual calculation.

It's a combination of both plus intelligence. What skill is it that determines if you can read a spellbook? Is it just spellcasting, or is it one of the skills related to the spells within the book? I also have some translocation and summoning spells. I have some level 5-ish conjuration spells that I don't think I'll even have a chance of memorizing, let alone cast successfully. I'm now deciding what spell school I should side invest in. I also had great luck in finding a floor with 4 shops and 3-4 spellbooks lying around. The demon summoning has gotten me out of a number of sticky situations when I didn't have enough bodies or magic points to make undead minions. Minor destruction allowed me to (sometimes) deal with undead monsters that my offensive necromantic spells couldn't harm. When I found the ecumenical temple and pledged my devotion to Mahkleb, things got even better. Once you get to level 3 and can cast vampiric drain, that allows you to kill efficiently and regain health without using potions. The fact that from the start, you can cast pain with no health penalty is great. I'm a 10th level deep dwarf necromancer, and I'm down to dungeon level 11. I'm doing great with my current character.
